The Father and the Family
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15
In most cases, it is the spiritual leadership of the father which determines the direction in which the family will move spiritually – andthis is Scriptural. What a responsibility rests upon the father for the spiritual as well as the physical welfare of the family! It is his leadership under which -
The Family Worships – What a blessing when an entire family worships together—in the church and in the home. If a father is remiss in his responsibility in either area, he will reap sorrow and sadness later on. When Christ is allowed to be Head of a home in all phases of its conduct, fathers will find problems of guidance lessened.
The Family Loves - Love can be the difference between an infant’s normal physical progress and slow progress. This has been proven in hospitals where babies have been kept for various reasons, and it has been noted that their progress has been slower, despite clinical conditions of food and other care, than the progress made by slum children who had poor care but mother love. Love is vitally important in a child’s upbringing that the father as well as the mother can provide.
The Family Learns – Children as well as parents learn valuable lessons in getting along together through experience. The father is a learner also, but in most cases he is a teacher by example and precept. Family sharing times are important; family fun together is important.
The Family Prays – Grace at the table is not sufficient time spent in prayer. A time for family devotions together is vital to spiritual growth of all. Christianity is a fellowship as well as being a way of life, and the family unit is the most basic part of this fellowship.
The Family Plans- The time when father was the dictatorial head of the home has passed. Today a democratic atmosphere should permeate the Christian home. Much of the fun of family activities lies in planning things together. The same togetherness should characterize the financial aspects of family life.
All of these aspects of family life lie in the power of the father to utilize or smother. In a very real sense, family happiness rests in the hands of the father. He is the one who speaks for his family. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
